Import Outlook PST Files into Thunderbird

.

pstimport_cropped.jpg
Windows/Linux (Thunderbird): Import Outlook's PST files and choose which email folders to bring into Thunderbird with PST Import, a free extension for the open-source, cross-platform email manager Thunderbird. While Thunderbird can import certain messages and settings from an existing Outlook installation, the PST Import add-on lets you set up email on Linux systems, and gives Thunderbird users the ability to pull specific email folders from a stand-alone PST file. The program was coded in France and one user review noted a dialog pop-up in French language, but the instructions should be fairly straightforward, regardless. PST Import is a free download and is listed as working with Windows and Linux versions of Thunderbird

20 Do’s and Don’ts of Effective Web Design

.

Below are twenty do’s and don’ts of effective web design. Study, read, (re)read and print this page. It will help either make or break your website. And don’t hesitate to let us know of anything we might have left out, in the comments below. We love getting your opinions on things and discussing the articles with you – after all, you’re quite possibly the coolest people in the world.

DO: Keep your page structured

In the recent months we’ve seen an explosion of great grid layouts and css files. The most famous (in my opinion) being 960.gs and one of the cooler, more light weight grid systems being the 1kb grid. Following after the structure and balance of a great magazine/newspaper, these grid systems help lay out information in a structured and easy to follow format.

Example

DONT: Just place boxes everywhere

We’ve all seen these types of websites before – 20+ boxes, all different sizes, nothing lining up properly and not on piece that actually grabs your attention because you’ve just ran into a whirlwind of craziness. if you’re a web designer and you cannot properly place items in a structured environment, well, I would’t really call yourself a web designer.

DO: Focus on what’s important

Are you building a website for a business that sells one specific product? If so, make sure that’s the focus of the home page. Allow yourself space on the inner pages to place calls to action for that specific item. If you’re building a blog that gives out freebies or writes tutorials, make sure they’re getting the proper amount of focus and attention. Websites like WOO Themes do a great job and putting forward what their main focus is – wordpress themes.

How to setup Efficient Digital Photography Work-flow (Beginners)

. Wednesday, October 28, 2009

digital-photography-workflow
First of all, the inevitable question – “What is Digital Photography work-flow?”. In simplified explanation:

“Digital photography work-flow” is a systematic series of process to capture, develop, sort, organize, export and backup your digital photos.

I’m just a beginner photographer and I am learning photography in the hard way. My only teacher is Google and Flickr community. Walking along the path to the learning photography I actually realized that it is required to have a systematic work-flow for your digital photo processing. Slowly by many trial and error I’ve found a simplified way to capture, develop, sort, organize, export and archive my digital photo collection. Professional Photographers might have more efficient systems for their own digital photo processing which I would love to learn from them. Moving ahead, lets see how we could organize our overwhelming collection of digital photos.

How to backup Firefox, Safari, Chrome, Opera, and IE with FavBackup

. Wednesday, October 21, 2009
0 comments

Most of you Firefox users probably use the FEBE Firefox extension to backup/restore your Firefox profile (or maybe using the manual mode of copying your Firefox profile folder). The problem with the FEBE extension is that you are not allowed to restore a complete Firefox profile to an existing one that you are using. So you need to fire up the Firefox Profile Manager to switch the profile and do the things you need to restore your existing Firefox profile completely.

This stand alone application, FavBackup, can actually do the job easier and it can also backup Chrome, Opera, Safari, Flock, and Internet Explorer as well! Check out this mini FavBackup review post!

Using FavBackup to backup Firefox/Safari/Chrome/Opera/IE

I did a simple test by backing up my Firefox profile:

How to Backup Firefox

As you can see from the screenshot, you can actually specify what you want to backup (Cookies, Bookmarks, History, Saved Passwords, etc). The safest way is to backup everything and restore only what you need later on. I didn’t tick the Extensions because I noticed that my Firefox did some weird things – where it couldn’t seem to display a page properly (CSS or HTML problem) at times. I suspected one of the Firefox extensions was causing this anomaly.

Specify the profile you want to backup, along with the location of the backup file (which is a single dat file after the backup is completed).

I then uninstalled my Firefox completely, erasing all data and preferences during the uninstallation process. After reinstalling Firefox 3.6 Beta 1, I confirmed that I have lost all my previous profile completely.

I then fire up FavBackup to see whether it can completely restore my existing profile.

Using FavBackup to restore Firefox/Safari/Chrome/Opera/IE

Restore Firefox Profile from backup file

Choose what I wanted to restore, pointed to the dat (backup) file, and clicked the Next button. That was it. I then opened up my Firefox again and everything (bookmarks, address/URL history, cookies, passwords, forms history, etc) is still there!

I haven’t tried the other browsers yet (although I have Opera, Chrome, Safari, and IE installed) but the concepts are the same!

You can do a partial backup/restore (like I mentioned earlier) or a complete/full backup and restore of your favorite web browsers. You don’t even have to install FavBackup. It’s a stand alone .EXE application and all you have to do is click on the file to open the program.

It’s free, it works, it’s nifty! Go grab it and backup your Firefox/Chrome/Opera/Flock/Safari/IE now before something happens!

Best Green Web Designs and Green Blog Designs

. Sunday, October 18, 2009

As web and graphic designers, one of the easiest ways we can help out a green organization is to help out with their site’s design. There are a lot of big environmental websites out there with great information which could do with a facelift!

Hopefully the sites below will inspire you with what you can come up with for a “green” website, whether it’s green or not!

And more importantly, the content on all these sites is packed with information on the effects of issues like global warming and foresting, along with tips on how to reduce your impact.

Inhabitat – One of the nicest green color palettes in this list.9

Planet Green – With a pretty brave logo! Seems to work though.2

Pando.org – No green to be found, which is a nice change! This one’s all in the header photo.3

The Greenists – Little details like the leaves in the nav and sidebar headings are done perfectly. 6

Treehugger – You *must* load up this site and check out their navigation trick on the right side.4
